Complicaciones gingivales en pacientes con covid-19.

Abstract

Since December 2019, an outbreak of atypical pneumonia named COVID-19 has been detected in China and after reaching a global distribution it was classified as a pandemic. Complications of COVID-19 can occur and are caused by a severe inflammatory reaction that shares some common signs with periodontal diseases. Therefore, it is possible that there is an association between the complications of COVID-19 and the presence of gingivitis or periodontitis. The stated objective was to investigate the possibility of gingival complications in patients with COVID-19. It was a bibliographic review in which six publications were included. COVID-19 may affect gum health. Gingival pain and bleeding, swollen gingiva, and necrotic interdental papillae may be present, consistent with necrotizing gingivitis. There are comorbidities that are considered risk factors for complications and death in patients with COVID-19, including COPD, diabetes, obesity, and periodontal disease. In addition, the oral cavity is abundant in receptors with the ability to modulate virus attachment, replication, and an undesirable proinflammatory response.
