El tabaquismo y su influencia en los tejidos periodontales en pacientes adultos

Abstract

Periodontal disease is a very common pathology in adults, with serious consequences both dentally and systemically. Tobacco consumption is closely related to the damage evidenced in the periodontal tissue of people who have this habit. The objective proposed in this research was to describe the current scientific knowledge about smoking and its influence on periodontal tissues in adult patients, through a bibliographic review of indexed research. A theoretical-descriptive review was carried out, analyzing scientific articles published in indexed journals between 2015 and 2022, consulting the databases to select the information on the subject. As a result, diverse information was obtained regarding smoking and its influence on periodontal tissues in adult patients, with evidence of the significant association between smoking and periodontal disease, the presence of specific bacteria that contribute to the progress of the disease with a weakened immune system to react effectively. It is concluded that smoking is strongly associated with periodontal disease, contributes to the progression of the disease, recurrences and a poor response to treatment. The main recommendations are surgical treatment combined with antibiotic therapy, periodic review and counseling to quit smoking.
