Abstract

The San Mateo parish is an environment where fishing activity constitutes a vital component that supports the local economy. However, despite the apparent economic benefits, concerns remain about equity, sustainability and commercial justice in this industry. This study focuses on analyzing the impact of fishing activity on the promotion of fair trade practices in San Mateo. The economic and social dynamics that influence the fishing value chain are investigated, with the aim of identifying existing challenges and imbalances. The research uses a mixed methodology, combining qualitative and quantitative elements through observation sheets, surveys and interviews with experts. The results reveal that, despite local initiatives to promote fair trade, delays still persist in the development of the fishing productive sectors. The need for specific strategies, activities and programs aimed at improving the socioeconomic conditions of fishermen, better aligning business practices with their development needs, is highlighted.
