Abstract: | Fishmeal is produced from species caught secondarily in commercial fishing and from residues of the fishing industry. It is a powder obtained by milling and drying whole fish and their residues, rich in proteins and essential biological factors. The production process involves cooking, pressing or centrifuging to remove oil, and drying to reduce moisture. The demand for fishmeal has grown, especially in China and the European Union, offering export opportunities for Ecuador. The fishmeal industry is crucial to the economy of Jaramijó, on the coast of Ecuador, driven by its access to the Pacific Ocean. In recent years, Ecuadorian exports have increased, with main destinations being Japan, Colombia, and China. Globalization and trade agreements have facilitated this growth, while international demand continues to rise. |
