Abstract: This research examines the implications of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Ecuador and China, signed on May 10, 2023. This agreement promises immediate or short-term tariff relief in a market of 1.4 billion consumers, presenting both opportunities and challenges for the Ecuadorian aquaculture sector. The aquaculture sector is vital to Ecuador's economy, with significant exports of shrimp, tuna and fish. In the second quarter of 2023, shrimp exports reached USD 1,964 million. However, overfishing is a concern that aquaculture helps mitigate. The main objective of the study is to analyze the benefits and challenges of the FTA with China in the Ecuadorian aquaculture sector. Exports to China are detailed and the cultural differences between both countries are explored. In addition, internationalization strategies are proposed to improve exports in the aquaculture sector. The study uses an analytical methodology with a quantitative approach, resorting to the hypothetical-deductive method. Data is collected through observation, measurement, and review of relevant literature. The results show that the FTA can boost economic growth and increase exports, but also presents challenges such as the need to meet the demands of the Chinese market.
