Abstract: Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is considered a chronic metabolic disease, degenerative and multifactorial etiology, which is characterized by high levels of blood glucose. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a growing health problem for the world, since, according to certain estimates, “537 million adults now live with diabetes worldwide, reflecting a 16% increase from estimates previous ones in 2019.” (International Diabetes Federation, 2021) The World Health Organization (WHO, 2022) states that “the number of people with diabetes mellitus worldwide has quadrupled in the last three decades and is the ninth leading cause of death worldwide. While, in Ecuador, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses, in 2017, diabetes mellitus was the second cause of death in the country. The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) in Ecuador varies according to the general population, since in the population between 10 and 59 years of age the prevalence is 2.7% and from 60 to 64 years of age is 15.2%, in addition a higher rate of cases is reported in provinces of the Coast and the Insular zone with a higher incidence in women. (Ministry of health Public, 2017).
Description: La Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 es considerada una enfermedad metabólica crónica, degenerativa y de etiología multifactorial, la cual se caracteriza por niveles elevados de glucosa en sangre. La Diabetes mellitus (DM) es un problema creciente de salud para el mundo, ya que, de acuerdo con ciertas estimaciones, “537 millones de adultos viven ahora con diabetes en todo el mundo lo que refleja, un aumento del 16% desde estimaciones anteriores en el año 2019”. (Federación Internacional de Diabetes, 2021).
