Abstract

Coastal cities such as Manta and Jaramijó have experienced significant growth in their commercial sector, with a large number of companies engaged in wholesale and retail trade. The basic wage is a determining factor for the well-being of workers in this sector, as it directly influences their purchasing power and quality of life. In Ecuador, the current basic wage is often below the cost of the basic family basket, creating a gap between income and household expenses. It is essential to analyze the effects of increasing the basic wage on the profitability of commercial enterprises in Manta and Jaramijó in recent decades. This study will identify how variations in the basic wage impact operating costs, profit margins, and ultimately, the competitiveness of businesses. Furthermore, it will enable understanding the consumption habits of the inhabitants of these cities and assess the impact of economic growth on social well-being.
