Abstract: Xerostomia consists of a decrease in salivary flow and changes in the composition of the saliva. This condition has various causes and is affected by the function of the salivary glands. The consequences are associated with decreased salivary function, which increases the risk of halitosis, cavities and dental erosion. The objective was to describe the clinical management of secondary consequences in xerostomia. A systematic review was carried out that included 20 articles that were published between 2015 and 2024. The results identified that the clinical management of xerostomia includes various options such as the use of salivary substitutes based on carboxymethylcellulose, the use of polymers, mouthwashes such as Saliva Orthana, and oral gel products such as Biotene. Alternative therapies are also mentioned such as electrical stimulation and acupuncture in salivary glands that help increase salivary flow. It was concluded that the secondary consequences of xerostomia include pain, difficulties in eating food, dysgeusia with a predominance of bitter and salty taste; halitosis; fissures and breaks of the lips and burning of the tongue and/or lips.
