Abstract

This research work addresses the social and economic impact of the manufacture of toquilla straw hats in the canton of Montecristi during the year 2024. The research is framed in the context of the Social Work career of the Universidad Laica Eloy Alfaro de Manabí and is based on the need to understand the socioeconomic dynamics that affect the artisans of this cultural tradition. Through a qualitative approach, interviews and life history analysis were used to gather relevant information about the artisans' experiences. The dimensions of the problem area, the purposes of the research and the justification for its social relevance were identified. The findings reveal that the manufacture of the toquilla straw hat not only represents a source of income for the families, but also contributes to the preservation of the cultural identity of the region. It also discusses the challenges faced by artisans, such as unfair competition and lack of access to wider markets. The research concludes with recommendations aimed at strengthening artisan training, improving marketing conditions and promoting public policies that support this economic activity. This study not only contributes to academic knowledge about the manufacture of the toquilla straw hat, but also seeks to raise awareness about the importance of preserving this tradition and improving the quality of life of those who depend on it. The research is presented as a valuable resource for future interventions in the field of social work and community development.
