Abstract

This work was approached from the problem of reading comprehension, evidencing deficiencies in the reading processes that negatively impact the academic performance of students. Improving the skills provided by reading comprehension is essential for the academic success and comprehensive development of all individuals. The objective of this study was to analyze reading comprehension and academic performance in seventh-year students at the Tres de Julio Educational Unit. This research was carried out from a positivist paradigm with a mixed approach, at a descriptive level, using the type of field research. A survey of closed questions and an observation sheet was applied to the students to obtain relevant information that contributes significantly to the research. On the other hand, an interview with structured questions aimed at teachers. The results obtained in this study reveal that students have a deficient level in the reading comprehension process. In turn, teachers state that they have knowledge of the strategies for the development of these skills; however, due to the results obtained in the observation sheet, it is suggested that educational institutions provide continuous training on strategies that improve understanding. students' reading skills, so that these can be implemented in the teaching plan, motivating students to take the initiative to read and providing optimal environments for the execution of activities will allow them to improve their academic performance.
