Abstract: | The research “Characterization of the Artisanal Fishing Sector in the Cantonal Head of Pedernales” analyzed the socioeconomic and environmental impact of artisanal fishing in the area. A mixed approach was used, applying surveys to 85 fishermen and 63 vessels, along with interviews with representatives of fishing organizations. The results showed that artisanal fishing was the main source of income, although fishermen faced limitations in infrastructure and access to financing. It was determined that 98% were men, with an age range between 37 and 72 years and a low educational level. The main species captured included lobster (Panulirus gracilis), langostino (Scyllarides astori), and snapper (Lutjanus peru), using gillnets and hand lines. In economic terms, 85% of fishermen earned between 1,001 and 2,000 dollars per month, largely depending on external financing. It was observed that commercialization took place in local markets, hotels, and restaurants. Additionally, 68% belonged to fishing organizations, although access to credit was limited. The conclusions highlighted the need to strengthen regulation and training in the artisanal fishing sector to improve its sustainability and economic stability. |
