Abstract: The pollution caused by fishing nets is a significant problem facing the marine ecosystems of Ecuador due to the increasing fishing activity in the country. In the province of Manabí, fishing is a vital source of food and employment for its inhabitants, who are often unaware of the dangers their nets pose to the ecosystems. Bureo, through its Net Positiva program, aims to recycle these fishing nets to manufacture various objects, collaborating with fishing communities to achieve this goal. This review article aims to analyze the impact of fishing nets on the environment and evaluate the effectiveness of the Net Positiva program in recycling nets, as well as its ability to mitigate the pollution of nets and plastics that seep into the ocean. The information search revealed that most documentation on the impact of nets on the environment is found in student theses not published in scientific journals, which limits the relevance of their results. Fishing nets can have negative effects on living organisms, such as entangling them and causing their death, as well as accumulating in the sea and damaging the habitat of many species. Net Positiva addresses this problem by reusing the nets and preventing tons of them from reaching the sea. It is recommended that this initiative reach more places in the country to generate a positive impact on Ecuador's biodiversity.
