Abstract

The study "Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism: Case Study of Portoviejo" aims to strengthen the intangible heritage of the Portoviejo canton to contribute to the development of sustainable cultural tourism. With a mixed approach, the research combines analytical-synthetic and inductive-deductive methods and employs techniques such as document review and surveys applied to a representative sample of the local population. The results highlight the identification of 11 intangible cultural heritages of Portoviejo, both cultural and natural, and their significant contribution to local tourism, especially traditional gastronomy, which has gained international recognition. The main conclusion is that, to maximize the potential of intangible heritage, it is essential to implement strategies such as cultural festivals, workshops, and tourism promotion, ensuring sustainability and active participation of the local community.
