Abstract: | Traditional management of pregnant/lactating sows in the backyard system has generated problems that affect animal production and quality, due to the lack of adequate sanitary conditions. This, in turn, increases production complexity due to extensive intermediation in the industry and the lack of knowledge of pig farmers. The objective of the study was to compare, from an agroeconomic approach, the backyard and deep aerial litter systems in the stage of pregnant/lactating sows in the Boyacá parish of the Chone canton, to generate proposals for improvement. Several production units were evaluated through two methodological approaches: theoretical (analysis - synthesis) and empirical (statistical method - break-even point), using techniques such as surveys, interviews, and observation. The results showed that the backyard system presented more drawbacks in areas such as facilities, food, animal health, environment, marketing, management, and genetics. Regarding the economic analysis, the aerial deep bed system was more profitable than the backyard system. The latter revealed that pig farmers face limitations in their capacity for growth and productive reinvestment. Thus, the aerial deep litter system presents greater advantages both in management efficiency and economic profitability, which suggests the need to modernize practices in swine production. |
