Abstract: | Type II diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that significantly impacts the quality of life of older adults, complicated by sleep disorders that affect both physical and emotional well-being. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this research will address several key issues, starting with a review of type II diabetes mellitus and its prevalence among older adults, and will also address sleep disorders, their types, and their impact on the health of this population. In addition, it will analyze how these disorders affect the quality of life of diabetic patients and will mention effective strategies to improve both sleep and quality of life in older adults suffering from this disease. Methodology: It is based on a qualitative approach through a systematic review of literature. A search for scientific articles was carried out in scientific databases using specific keywords related to diabetes, sleep disorders, and older adults, resulting in the selection of 18 relevant articles for the full analysis. Discussion: Three key points are highlighted. First, factors such as obesity, overweight, pain, and diabetic complications are identified, which, together with psychological aspects such as stress, contribute to causing sleep disorders in older diabetic adults. Second, insomnia and obstructive apnea are the most common disorders in this population. Finally, it is emphasized that physical exercise and self-care are essential to improve both sleep quality and quality of life in this population. Conclusions: Sleep disorders represent a challenge for older diabetic adults, negatively impacting their health and quality of life. Therefore, it is crucial to promote healthy lifestyles and self-care strategies to improve sleep and in turn improve their quality of life. |
