Abstract: | Amniotic fluid embolism is a low-frequency obstetric complication that occurs due to the passage of amniotic fluid or fetal material into the pulmonary circulation of the pregnant woman following an interruption of the maternal-placental nexus. Aim: To determine the complications of amniotic fluid embolism that affect maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Methodology: A systematic search was carried out in databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, in English and Spanish, published from 2020 to 2024, following the recommendations of the PRISMA 2020 Declaration. Results: Amniotic fluid embolism is caused by the passage of particles present in the amniotic fluid into the bloodstream, risk factors mostly are age and maternal history, and altered laboratory values may allow early diagnosis. Conclusions: The possible maternal complications are hemodynamic, respiratory, cardiac, hepatic, thyroid, neurological, death, neonatal asphyxia, and intrauterine fetal death. |
