Abstract

This research addressed two critical variables: substance use and family environment. This relevant study was based on the need to understand the changes that occur in the family structure when one of its members is a member of the family. It was also aimed at a key population, allowing for the generation of relevant results for the development of this study. The overall objective was to determine how substance use affects the family environment of members of the Narcotics Anonymous group in Manta Canton during the years 2024-2025. The aim was to delve deeper into the changes that occur in those who use the substance and how these changes are reflected in the other members of their family, in their ways of organizing and getting involved, and in turn, to understand the other problems generated by drug use. A quantitative study in which exploratory and descriptive research was implemented and supported by family systems theory and the functionalist theoretical perspective. This research was also related to the systemic model implemented in the social worker's intervention. The research results led to the conclusion that drug use becomes a systemic problem affecting all members of the family. The family environment is negatively influenced by strained relationships and interactions, difficulties in communication and organization, and financial difficulties. Furthermore, drug use causes conflictual relationships and violence among family members, which constantly affects family structure and dynamics.
