Abstract: The work "Cumandá" was relevant to understanding how the representation of Indigenous peoples, considered to be beings with simple and strange characteristics, has changed. This exclusion began in the colonial, but continues today. The text compares the situation of Indigenous peoples with the current reality, highlighting significant changes in the social, political, and cultural aspects of these communities. The objective of the research is to contrast the conditions of Indigenous peoples according to the work "Cumandá" with the current reality of these Native groups. A qualitative-comparative approach was used, using interviews as the main tool for data collection. Additionally, several academic texts were analyzed in depth to better understand the exercise of colonial rule during the period. The results show that the literature presents an idealized view of Native communities, which have solid political systems and a vibrant cultural. However, it also depicts a people who have struggled greatly with the problems of modern life, while striving to protect their valuable cultural customs. It is clear that, since the period of colonization, Indigenous peoples have been portrayed in close quarters. Despite progress in laws and the constitution, the gap between the rights they have in theory and how they actually experience them shows that colonialism still exists. However, the growing demands of Native peoples require greater cultural, which allows them to move beyond the passive and exotic image in narratives and move toward controlling their own destiny in today's Ecuador.
