Abstract: | This study identifies and analyzes the social prejudices present in Jorge Isaacs' novel María, contrasting them with those that persist in today's society. It examines how social norms shape human behavior and, at the same time, generate stigmatization toward those who deviate from them. The study is based on the premise that these conventions remain in force, affecting both individual perception and social relations. The methodology applied was a mixed approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Through surveys administered to eighth-semester students in the Language and Literature Education program and the use of semi-structured interviews with a psychology professional, the content of the novel was interpreted, identifying social prejudices that still echo today. Using the inductive method, patterns that persist were extracted through textual analysis to address social reality. Subsequently, a comparative table was used to contrast the internal prejudices of the work with their incidence today. The analysis shows that in María, prejudices such as racism, religious control, the submissive role of women, and romantic relationships within the family are normalized. Using the techniques applied, these stigmas were compared with people's current thinking on these issues, revealing that prejudices. |
