Cuantificación de los efectos económicos por la inseguridad en el Cantón de Pedernales periodo 2022 – 2023.

Abstract

This research is developed to quantify the economic effects generated in the canton of Pedernales due to insecurity in the periods 2022-2023. The goal of this study is to know how insecurity impacts the different productive sectors, such as tourism, agriculture, commerce, fishing and the quality of life of the people who reside in the Pedernales Canton. The research methodology is based on the mixed method approach, in which quantitative and qualitative methods are combined. The techniques used are survery and interviews, which made it possible to obtain relevant information base on the research objectives. Insecurity economically impacted a total of $50,217,073.01, distributed as follows: tourism: $1,478,553.98, commerce: $5,725,331.43, agriculture: $41,086,140.60, fishing: $1,927,046.00. Agriculture was the most affected sector, since it generated 81.8% of the total, mainly due to theft of inputs, livestock and crops. On the other hand, tourism and commerce had a lower impact, derived from extortion, reduction in clients and an increase expenses as a result of adopting security measures. In conclusion, it was determined that insecurity negatively affects the economic development of the canton, generating reduction in the income of companies, limiting investment and causing additional costs represented by the implementation of security measures. This results in a negative impact on the profitability and sustainability of local businesses.
