Abstract

Illiteracy is a social problem that has received the attention of various governments and organizations for many years, seeking to eradicate it. This thesis addresses the impact of illiteracy on the personal development of the residents of the 5 de Agosto neighborhood through qualitative research, using interviews and life histories. A descriptive methodology is also used, allowing for comprehension and analytical-inductive analysis due to the collection of verbal and direct information from illiterate individuals. All of this has demonstrated that illiteracy is still present in society and is caused by factors such as machismo, poverty, alcoholism, and family disintegration, among others. These represent a common denominator in the various cases studied. It was also learned that illiteracy has consequences such as poverty, unemployment, exploitation, and social isolation, among other problems, and these limit the personal development of those who find themselves in this condition. Illiteracy represents a challenge and reveals the need not only for its eradication in the new generations but also for the creation of solutions and guarantees for the populations affected by its presence, since they are victims of countless violations.
