Abstract

Fair trade is a system of commercial relations that seeks to guarantee equity and sustainability, by prioritizing the well-being of products especially in developing countries, which is why this degree work seeks how fair trade can be related to artisanal fishing in the Playita Mía sector of the Tarqui parish of the Manta canton, through information collected from surveys conducted with the same fishermen in the sector, fulfilling each of the objectives set. Within the theoretical framework, the general concept of fair trade is described, its 10 principles that govern it, where fair trade originated and for what purpose, important issues such as fishing within Ecuador and how it has been evolving in recent years are addressed, mention is made of artisanal fishing within Manabí, being an important location for the fishing activity of the country, having the Manta canton as the largest exporter of fishing at national and international level. Within this context, the artisanal fishing market in Playita Mía will be thoroughly analyzed, investigating how this sector has developed over the years, identifying the challenges faced by fishermen, with the aim of establishing a union between the principles of fair trade and artisanal fishing, exploring how the adoption of these practices can promote a more just and sustainable socioeconomic development for fishing communities and families within Manta. It will be studied how fair trade can be introduced into artisanal fishing in Playita Mía, in order to obtain fairer prices for their work, in addition to evaluating the environmental conditions in the sector, this in order to implement the principles of fair trade and comply with long-term social and economic development..
