Abstract

The Furukawa case in Ecuador revealed significant ethical concerns associated with foreign direct investment (FDI). This Japanese company, dedicated to the production of abacá, committed severe labor violations, highlighting a troubling lack of corporate s ocial responsibility. The case underscores the urgent need to implement effective oversight mechanisms to ensure compliance with labor and human rights standards in FDI operations. Although foreign investment can generate significant economic benefits, the Furukawa case demonstrates that it does not always guarantee fair or sustainable development. The absence of adequate supervision allowed Furukawa to engage in poor labor practices, emphasizing that attracting investments should not come at the expense of local communities' well-being. Establishing robust oversight mechanisms is essential to ensure that FDI contributes to the sustainable and ethical development of the host country.
