Resumen : The design of structures with asymmetric geometry is called "Irregular Structures" in most design standards or codes, specifically the Ecuadorian Construction Standard penalizes these concepts in order to take into account these irregularities, responsible for poor performance in the event of an earthquake. In this context, the present research is aimed at evaluating the impact of irregularities on the seismic behavior of buildings. A completely regular structure was started to which various geometric irregularities were introduced, according to the guidelines established in the Ecuadorian Construction Standard. The main objective was to compare the structural performance of various models, using a linear and non-linear pushover analysis. The irregularities chosen for this investigation were; geometric irregularity, excessive setbacks in the corners and discontinuity in the floor system. Where it was verified which of these has the greatest impact on compliance with the verifications required by the Ecuadorian Standard. In addition, with the help of non-linear pushover analysis, plastic hinges were verified allowing the determination of failure mechanisms. The ductility of all structures was also determined, resulting in less ductile models with limited capacity to dissipate energy through deformations, and models with high ductility, but nevertheless obtaining lower ultimate displacements than a regular structure.
Descripción : La concepción de estructuras con geometría asimétrica es denominada como “Estructuras Irregulares” en la mayoría de normas o códigos de diseño, específicamente la Normativa Ecuatoriana de la Construcción penaliza estas concepciones con el fin de tomar en cuenta dichas irregularidades, responsables de un comportamiento deficiente ante la ocurrencia de un sismo. En este contexto, la presente investigación se orienta a evaluar el impacto de las irregularidades sobre el comportamiento sísmico de las edificaciones.
