Estudio de la identidad cultural a partir del libro “Indigenismo e Identidad en Manabí”.

Abstract

This study stems from a clear concern: traditional practices on the Manabí coast, such as pottery, toquilla straw hat weaving, and artisanal fishing, remain prevalent but do not receive the recognition they deserve. Through an analysis of Libertad Regalado Espinoza's work, Indigenismo e identidad en Manabí, and the direct testimony of artisans from communities such as Montecristi and Jaramijó, we sought to understand how these activities have influenced the province's cultural identity and their current role. The methodology used was qualitative, employing structured interviews and content analysis. The results show that these practices, although they have undergone changes over time, remain essential in daily life, not only as a source of economic sustenance but also as an expression of memory, resistance, and a sense of belonging. Knowledge is transmitted orally, community ties remain strong, and the relationship with the territory remains deep. Although these activities face challenges such as the erosion caused by globalization, institutional abandonment, and generational change, they have not disappeared; on the contrary, they adapt without completely losing their roots. It is concluded that speaking of Manabi's cultural identity implies considering these practices as part of a living legacy, one that is not preserved solely in display cases but manifests itself in daily work, in inherited knowledge, and in the way people continue to create with their own hands.
