dc.description.abstractThis research proposes to develop critical-reflective thinking in ninth year students of the Unidad Educativa Fiscomisional ‘Juan Montalvo’ through the reading of images. This strategy seeks to address students' difficulties in questioning and reflecting. It focuses on the influence of image reading, obstacles to critical-reflective thinking and teaching strategies. It is proposed to investigate the reading of images and critical thinking, for this purpose the formative process through the reading of images was diagnosed. A comparative analysis was carried out through triangulation. In the theoretical framework, magazines, theses and instruments made by some writers such as Boteros and Gómez, UNESCO, and others that favoured the previous knowledge of the subject, were shown in order to identify the reading of images and critical thinking. Qualitative methodology was used to analyse the students' opinions, with an explanatory approach and a deductive method. The population consisted of 9th grade EGB students from the ‘Juan Montalvo’ Fiscal Educational Unit, two arts teachers and two language and literature teachers from the Eloy Alfaro Laica University of Manabí in Manta. Information was collected through interviews with teachers and students. The results indicated that critical reading of images is a valuable tool for developing critical and reflective thinking skills. Teachers play an essential role in promoting the interpretation, analysis and critical discussion of images.es
