Abstract

Media representation of violence in the media has a significant impact on public perception and the construction of social discourse about this phenomenon. In the context of Ecuador, where violence has increased in recent years, the media plays a crucial role in shaping how this issue is understood. This thesis aims to analyze the representation of violence in the digital medium El Universo during 2024, in order to assess its influence on social perception and discourse on violence in the country. The types of violence most reported, their frequency, and the contexts in which they are presented were identified. Furthermore, the narratives and language used were evaluated, focusing on their tone and potential biases. The results show that, although the medium maintains an informative approach, it normalizes violence and relies on sensationalism in its images and narratives, which may influence public perception and contribute to the normalization of violence.
