Abstract

The novel Paper Towns by John Green is a juvenile literary work that invites us to reflect on the search for authenticity in the midst of appearances. The general objective of this research is to demonstrate how social pressure influences the construction of identity in adolescents, based on the analysis of this work. The methodology employed had a qualitative approach and the hermeneutic, bibliographic and intertextual methods were used. A student, a teacher, a mother, a psychologist, a sociologist and an anthropologist, whose perspectives and experiences allowed understanding how external influences and environmental expectations affect identity development, participated in the study. The questions were organized in a double-entry matrix that facilitated the analysis and an observation sheet was applied that allowed correlating the behaviors of the young people with the characters in the book. The results indicate that identity in adolescence is constructed and affected by several factors such as: the influence of friends, social expectations, family upbringing, rumors and the idealization of love; in short, adolescence is a stage where identity is forged or deteriorated according to experiences and the environment.
